Nautilus - Mixed Media Painting

This painting is part of a series of recent art changes in my artistic growth. I usually prefer working with oil paints, but have discovered an interest in mixed media collage.

In this art piece I used a mixture of magazine images, Prisma markers, gel mediums and acrylic paints.

The primary imagery emerges from a nautilus shell as if it was a Genie lamp that had been rubbed. Mystic vapors contain tangental elements of chivalry’s development. The dog howls bringing forth a right hand that is marked with intricate symbols. The hand holds a captured queen. There remains elements of man (skull) and armor of ancient warriors.

Although the primary material is magnificent, the delicacies of the background are not diminished. Behind the mystic vapors a backdrop of land, sea, and air creatures appear languishing in the nether regions of a primordial soup.

Dimensions: 38cm X 76cm X 6cm

Materials: Magazine Clippings, Gel Mediums, Prisma Markers, Acrylic Paint

That came out so freakin’ good! All the elements are so balance and work very well together. You can’t even tell what’s painted and collaged. Bravo.

  2. I love the effect of the metallic colors swirling about, they look great.

I also enjoy the myriad details in both foreground and background, some of which are blended as to exist only as hints here, at this size, and suggest a subconscious layer to the work. Excellent!
